PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Adrienne Farb’s paintings are expressions of experience—imagined and observed, real and dreamed.  Through her particular style of abstraction, Farb translates her experiences of specific places and times into compositions of bold, vertical bands of color.

Farb’s work derives from her background in art history, and her twenty plus years of living and painting in Paris, followed by London, and now New York. Influenced by 19th century French painters (e.g. Monet), Farb has always worked in series, returning to the same place or subject matter to explore under different conditions. Drawing in nature has been a consistent practice of Farb’s and enables her to refresh her vision. These drawings (in pencil, gouache, and the latest series in shellac ink) allow Farb to store visual memories of time and place, and to go beyond observed reality.

Whether based in nature or inspired by her urban environment, Farb’s works are rendered in a language of colored bars that vary in size, color, saturation and intensity.  Her use of color is simultaneously powerful and subtle and through her layering of oils of many colors, she creates hues that are almost indescribable.  Of her work, Farb says, “I want my work to be both monumental and intimate, no matter the scale.  I also want my work to have a purity of form, emotional force and intensity.  I want color, form and surface to become one.”

This exhibition includes three new painting series: Toubkal, inspired by the geometry, textiles, and color combinations absorbed from a recent trip to Morocco, Cipolla Rossa (Red Onion), and Frutti di Bosco (Fruits of the Forest).  In these new series, “…the paintings seem to start more at the edges of the canvas and work their way in.  There’s a stronger sense of roundness, the color is fuller and more defined; there is more twisting and bending of the colors--the colors are more physical… Some color passages are isolated, others twist together to form new color harmonies or discordances.”

Adrienne Farb currently lives and works in New York after living in Paris for over 20 years.  Recent museum exhibitions include Paintings, Cantor Gallery of Art, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA.  Farb has exhibited widely across the US and in Europe since the 1980’s.  She has works in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, and the Prints and Drawings departments of the Fogg Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, and the British Museum, London, UK.  This is her second show at Mary Ryan Gallery.
